Statement of Intent
Bees are vitally important to sustaining life. Without bees (and other pollinating insects) most plants would die leaving only wind pollinating species behind (corn, wheat, rice). No fruits or vegetables would have a hugely negative impact on our quality of life and without cotton we would be deprived of many necessities and goods that we rely on. It is important for students (and the general population) to understand the vital role bees play in the environment and the sustainability of the planet.
Over a five day period, students would learn about bees, their importance to the environment, and what would happen if the bees were to disappear; including possible environmental factors that are negatively impacting bees. Students will learn that bees are a very complex and highly organized species that we are dependent on for much of our food and even clothing (cotton). They will discover that the loss of bees would be highly detrimental to the environment and that we would be unable to sustain the quality of life as we know it without them.
